Armor Hunter Mellowlink | Retcon_404 (Anime Retrospective)
Armor Hunter Mellowlink tells the story of a man, a gun, and his quest to destroy everyone involved in a deadly conspiracy. As a standalone OVA sequel to Armored Trooper VOTOMS, Mellowlink provides enough heart-pumping action to stand on its own. But does the show still hold up 25 years later?

Metal Armor Dragonar was supposed to be a new take on Mecha War anime, taking all the lessons learned from Gundam to birth a new franchise. Dragonar's failure to launch has left it as a relic of a bygone era, but does tha...

Released in 2002 for the Sony Playstation 2 and Nintendo GameCube, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai blazed a trail for 3d anime fighters in the console space. Though dated by todays standards, there is no telling where series like Ultimate Ninja Storm and Dragon Ball Fighterz would be without the original Budokai. Part man. Part alien. All superhuman. The Guyver: Bio-Booster Armor was released in 1989 as an OVA adaptation of the original Guyver manga. Ending is so disappointing they need to redo the whole shit and make it make sense.
Oh my GOD I forgot about that scene with Kou and Kelly and Magic is playing. People who are complaining about G-Witch being woke and Gay need to see that.
Metal Gear of mecha anime.
Merrowrink & Rurucy make an awesome 80's anime couple. Chef's kiss tier representation of the action theme in that era.
My first❤
That final season killed the momentum into Evangelion territory 😂 I love this show
Great show
What if Fox crushed his head instead of torso? 🤦♂️
I checked this one out on a whim some years ago and it really took me by surprise, I was expecting an okay action series but I was blown away by how remarkably deep the storytelling was, how layered the characters were and how heavy the themes hit. I actually thought this was something of an underrated series, might sound silly given how big Gundam is but, this series wasn't and still isn't held in very high regard, but I thought it was amazing. The ending actually made me cry, pretty much the only anime series that has. Obviously it had its flaws, the animation is charming but wobbly at times, and it can be a bit repetitive but everything just sort of works out in the end. I enjoyed this so much I can't bring myself to watch the sequel series, so I checked out the sideways shows like War in the Pocket and 08th MS team instead, and just like this I was blown away by how deep the characterization is, even when the storytelling isn't perfect, they put so much effort into making the people feel real, it gets me every time. Masterful series.
whoa, deep Ryosuke Takahashi cut
Retcon_404 I have a question what are your thoughts on tekkaman blade?
I know im late to this party but while Gundam F91 was a miss, it was mostly because of behind the scenes meddling from Sunrise. Tomino originally wrote F91 as a television series but was ordered to crush his already written 13 episodes into a 2 hour film and it shows in the final product. Despite that the film did present really interesting ideas to the table with such great mobile suit designs, F91 Gundam is one of my favorite designs in the franchise and gotta give credit that many of the death scenes are really brutal(with the exception of that one guy that came out from nowhere). If there is anything that needs a reboot, Gundam F91 definitely should to be what Tomino originally envisioned.
Mellowlink is still the only piece of VOTOMS I've watched thus far
Ahh finally, at the bottom of the list where I belong
They should absolutely capitalize on gunpla fighting for a videogame
The thing that bugs me is that this is the newest entry in uc (timeline wise)
There are actually two other Votoms stories that don't follow Chirico. There's "Case : Irvine" and "Votoms Finder" which are both pretty excellent. Irvine is one of the later main universe titles to come out but didn't use CGI which is cool to see. Finder is an alternative universe but also entirely worth a watch.
Aw man! If you got an original Xbox PLEASE PLEASE play Metal Wolf Chaos if you want just the most insane parody of America ever written!
For me, Mellowlink Armor Hunter is even better than the OG VOTOMS, the premise itself of a armor hunter is already unique enough to sets it as it's own thing, is also well done for the most part, most of his tactics feels real for the circumstances, the only other show I saw doing a similar stuff was the glorious 08 MS team in two episodes which Shiro went down to hunt MBS in a similar manner.
This show looks so cool. It reminds of me of Trigun without the super powers.
Mr. Content Creator Sir, PLEASE watch Robotech: New Generation
Mr. Content Creator Sir, can you PLEASE watch Robotech: New Generation
You should check out Gundam Thunderbolt
My new woke remake: Armored Trooper BOTTOMs. The proper nouns won't confuse you, but the pronouns will!
Id watch it
Sounds great, nothing really wrong with pronouns, think I'd watch it.
@@martyden9006 I don't have a problem with pronouns but I don't like having to guess them!
This needs a toy set.
Is there a video of you covering "Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam"? I can't find one. Did you just skip it to takle "Gundam ZZ"?
Seems like a decent show. I remember having Zoids Legacy for Gameboy Advanced. Just a shame my only memory is playing the early game over and over because saving never worked for whatever reason.
Gurren Lagann, Gurren Lagann, Gurren Lagann!!
Those knife lickers are freaky deaky.
I never managed to get into Votoms but this looks like an easier entry point into the series. I might check this out.
The bad guys in Stargate Atlantis have spaceships that are living beings. There's an episode where one of the crew becomes infected with the virus that turns you into a spaceship. It's pretty wild
Going from Z straight into ZZ, is possible the main reason I had such a hard time getting through ZZ. I honestly enjoyed the dark and grittiness of Z, because it made it more believable. I nocked out ZZ, due to watching gundam in chronological order.
Solid Snake
votoms mentioned video upvoted
Mellow reminds me of Crinn from Dougram with that poncho.
Mellowlink, if Rambo was in a mech universe
A guy bare-handing a fucking PILE BUNKER is insane.
This really was the peak period of American action movies influence on anime/manga. Shades of Commando, First Blood, Predator, and so many more. Which reminds me, Desert Punk (2004) also does the "SF action hero who wins through planning and guile" quite well.
yess. I really enjoyed this seeries. Glad you made a vid on it.
Hey can you please do Fafner Dead Agressor 404 Retrospective video please ?
This looks like a fine addition to the man with big gun shows.
The next retrospective you should do is _Crusher Joe._ It's obscure, but a really good OVA series.
the movie by Yasuhiko has some of the best animation i've ever seen
I think the obscureness depends. Western mecha fans who know about it probably know it as the other show besides Macross where a bunch of Battletech designs originate from.
Did this series ever get a Blu Ray release? Also...this reminds me of the recent Ninja Kaumi, but shows how to do a revenge focused lead better...maybe having the fights not devolve into bland CGI ninja's helped to.
I think it just got a Blu-ray release in Japan a year or two ago, as the film masters were luckily found fairly recently.
There was a big rerelease of the entirety of VOTOMS called the Perfect Soldier Collection but it was unholy expensive.
@@JustAnotherPest I have that, I think, and it seems to have everything besides this...was it suppose to be in it?
I guess even a crippled golem can be dangerous.
A mecha to surpass metal gear......
the power of the pile bunker
Never knew of this show looks I need to check it out
For some reason I've gotten several clips of this show suggested to me on UA-cam. I really enjoyed watching them!
6:00 Gundam vs Zeta Gundam is awesome, I still play PS2 game that follows the main points of story. I'm planning on watching the show for full context.
Finally! Only found the show last year but was very happy with it and made and AMV. I should check out the rest of the actual series however; Mellowlink is where I started
Votoms is great. IMO, one of the best series in the post-Gundam mecha boom of the 80s.
The bloody face tiger swipe is the equivalent to the police putting their gloves on, you know shit's gonna get real!!!
